About the Lab / Sobre el laboratorio
EN:
At the CE²B Lab, we explore the molecular foundations of evolution through both computational and experimental approaches. Our research focuses on the evolution of catalytic RNA and proteins, the origins of metabolic pathways, and the design of synthetic systems inspired by early life. By combining in vitro evolution, bioinformatics, and biochemical analysis, we aim to understand how molecular function emerges, adapts, and innovates.

About the PI / Sobre el Investigador Principal
EN:
Dr. Alberto Vázquez-Salazar is an evolutionary biologist and biochemist whose research explores the origin and early evolution of life. He combines experimental and computational approaches to study catalytic RNA (ribozymes), the molecular evolution of metabolic pathways, and the transition from RNA-based catalysis to RNA-protein systems.
He earned his Biology degree and PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) under the mentorship of Professor Antonio Lazcano. He later joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a Postdoctoral Scholar in Professor Irene A. Chen’s lab, where he was awarded a NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship and contributed to the ICAR initiative on the emergence of coded protein synthesis.
In 2025, Dr. Vázquez-Salazar became a Principal Investigator in the Department of Biochemistry at Cinvestav Zacatenco, leading research on catalytic RNA, metabolic evolution, and synthetic systems inspired by early life.
